We can't focus on policies as the end all be all when over 3/4 of Portlanders are unhappy with the current members of city council. I'm dedicated to leaving my ego at the door and putting the needs of my constituents, whether or not they have a permanent address, first. I'm not running to split the council into factions based on my own self-serving interests; I'm running to be a voice for Portlanders citywide and a representative of the people living in District 3. While you can't please everyone, elected officials are responsible for doing their best to implement positive and lasting changes to the city they live in. Let's keep Portland weird while making it a more equitable and thriving city for all.

At the root of many of our most complex issues is a mental healthcare desert. Oregonians report some of the highest rates of mental health disorders in our country. Untreated mental health issues create a strain on the system, from people continuously cycling through our housing systems to our public safety shortfalls that result in people experiencing active behavioral crises ending up in jail or worse. Add that to the self-medication that is substance abuse, and it becomes a recipe for disaster. When funding is discussed for any and all programs that aid individuals, we need to ensure that it is a multi-component program that not only serves the primary purpose (e.g., long-term housing) but supports the people benefitting from those services in sustaining the positive effects of the support received. Humans are pack animals, and reaching and maintaining sobriety and sanity requires a safe, welcoming, and supportive community for all.

As Portlanders, most of whom are taxpayers and many of whom are struggling to meet our own needs in the current economy, we deserve clarity about the impact of the city's budget on publicly funded programs. I will work to ensure that we review any government-funded projects and programs by not only looking at quantitative outcomes but by going straight to the people and communities they're supposed to serve. Easily accessible, publicly available, and jargon-free cost-benefit analyses should be mandatory across all items funded in part or in full by the city with accountability plans in place for the programs that fall short.
